Mark Zuckerberg, the young founder of Facebook and pioneer of the new digital world, was in Rome yesterday and spoke to students in LUISS, after visiting Pope Francis and the Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi.
It was an incredible opportunity and a great inspiration because of the many themes at stake. Pokemon Go, the importance of the origins to achieve success, to emotion in mentioning his daughter; Zuckerberg answered the many questions from students (whether LUISS or not) and those asked by the online community.
Many questions coloured the Aula Chiesa, in a Townhall Q&A that will be difficult to forget. To this extent, I found useful to write up a vademecum to keep clear the inspirations we received in this unforgettable day.
- Learn as much as you can, as quickly as you can. This will make up, basically, your work and professional purpose.
- Fail, but remember. Failure is a necessary part of the process of achieving success, that you can measure on the basis of the contribution you will be able to give the world. We often forget, though, that even the biggest thinkers and innovators, such as Albert Einstein, failed many times. This was a transition and a reason to call experience, to them: it was inevitable, but not impossible to overcome.
- Identify what changes you want to make. You should ask yourself: “What is my mission?”. And then start running to achieve it.
- Team is everything. The ‘Founder’ Myth as the pillar of the entire structure is disempowering, because nothing great was ever built by one person. No one wins by himself, but everyone wins if the group stays and walks together towards a single objective.
- Persevere. Nothing ever goes the way you want it to, but no panic. Just like Aeneas, we should find out the persistence that will take us to the target. Giving up is not an option.
- You cannot stop learning, because everything is learning.
- Listen to those around you. Understand circumstances. Surround yourself with the best team ever.
- Use the Internet as a mean, not as a purpose. Facebook is not a media company, rather a platform in which everyone takes his part to create content. Similarly, every product or services can leverage the power of the Internet, that maintains its role of enhancer of our expertise. The same goes for virtual reality.
- Technology will never replace face-to-face interaction, but is a valid complementary where distance makes a hurdle.
- Dream. Thinking big, seeing innovation as the engine of the “augmented wellbeing”, increased and shared in physical and virtual reality; the attitude to walk besides those who are able to enhance our knowledge, without losing sight of humanity and love: this is the key for success of the greatest innovators.
